Subject: Sophomore Digital Portfolio

I have these comments after having read all of the lectures for Week 1.
I find that the tone in which the materials are written is extremely
motivating.  The writing is very crisp and punchy, and "anticipates"
students' anxieties and resolves them in a reassuring and unpatronizing
way.  I think this is an excellent example of creating a learning community
by reaching out to students, expressing high expectations, encouraging
students to have high expectations for themselves, telling them what
they're going to be doing, etc.

The links seem to be unusually good, too.  I think they are used in a
number of ways: to provide reinforcement for material in the
lecture/reading; to provide a broad context for learning, such as a link to
portfolios online, a quick guest interview, a look at a professional
organization; to emphasize key points, and  more.  There is a wealth of
resources there in the first week that students can use as references
through their job search and earlier parts of their careers.

The lectures are so well written and address all of the competencies for
the week in a unified manner, rather than in a sequential manner.  The
latter isn't a bad way to do it, but this way is superior.  The knowledge
of the writer is well-established.  One has confidence in the "voice" of
the course.  The students will feel they are in an environment that is at
once stimulating, challenging, and safe.

The competencies for the course have been addressed in the lecture material
just fine. I am very pleased with this outcome.  Let's take a look at the
Assignments for Week One and see if the they're in line with the lectures,
and you'll be all set.

If this first week is any indication, this should be a great course!

Thanks,
Jane
