A warm welcome to
you, my Web-traveling friend,
You've arrived at the very non-traditional, from-the-heart ''cover letter'' to my
digital portfolio. Or rather, that is what it started out to be, until I realized that
this was the depths of my beliefs in the work that I do. Thus, it is truly my Artist's
Statement... a structure to glide through and on top of electronic oceans. A galleon,
a war ship... fit for meeting the challenges that appear, their timing measured in
nano-seconds. Their demand: clear, instant thinking and action.
This is the summation of a decade... much more than my resume and an arbitrary
description that we both might hope fits your needs. It is more than a compendium of related
items, a gathering of the product of years of service, a galleria of pieces created for others
and also for myself — evidence of the soul-searching and the moments of revelation:
What a piece of work! (Yes, we do know when a thing works, and when it
does not!)
This represents the sum of my creative works. Amongst the hustle, bustle, vim, vigor, racket,
rush, and overwhelmed-ness of the Internet... within my pages you will find a sincere
pouring of the heart... the knickknacks and memorabilia of almost nine years on the Internet.
You will also find hard-edged, clean-profiled, state-of-the-art grasp of these
technologies.
If you are seeking solutions for creative Net magic, you've come to the right place. If
you seek technical or academic/educational solutions, this is also the right place.
From ''just art,'' to moving and even moveable (!) art, to web design on
the front end and the back, to shopping and convincing and buying and selling...
You have arrived :c)
Most of all, if you are looking for unique and professional Web Design and Internet
technologies services — additions to your business that will set you apart, and that
will reach your clientele in ways you've not even considered — this is
the gateway.
My background on the Web began in 1994, with the AOL Gateway and a 2400Kb modem, on a Mac II
with a whopping 80MB drive! AOL's early advent on the WWW, which crashed more than it allowed
you a freedom of flight — had a phenomenal, high price compared to our surfing costs of
today! All to say, I perhaps had one of the earliest ''Web'' sites on the Internet.
My work in print and publication, including technical writing in those years (since 1989), led
me through the early Mosaic days... I literally have been a part of the architectural
force — which has built this Internet of ours. I've been in the global ''squad''
that has provided feedback and development suggestions for the hardware and software
(Office version 1.0! Photoshop version 1.0! Macromedia back when it was still MacroMIND!)
... and the browsers we use daily as our light-wave galleons... for indeed, traveling
this always-new medium, you NEED a warship!
What does this mean to you? In a building-block manner, my skills in the technologies
started with the love of Art — multimedia and graphics. In 1995 and a return to
university, it became my goal to show in action and product that Science and Art can, and do,
live together very comfortably (wow! what a Leonardo Da Vinci, Renaissance [wo]man idea!).
In fact, they may be seemingly the opposite sides of a coin, but the point is —
they still make up ONE COIN.
As with any excellent ''construction of a sound house,'' each digital tool and bit of
my expanding knowledge became part of the whole that I have termed The Creative's Tool
Kit.
My tool kit is extremely well-rounded, with broad skills in just about every electronic
technique, trick, tool, magic wand, gadget and widget — this exciting interactive
interface that we've come to love in our electric journeys — from illustration,
multimedia, and video to electronic publication (E-Books, flip-books, and dynamic E-Cover
creation), eBiz and eCommerce, the autoresponder maze and the shopping cart labyrinth...
merchant accounts and multi-choice catalogs and searchable product databases. Sigh. Are
you annoyed? Or simply bewildered?
You have arrived.
And what about this new set of multi-lingual alphabet soups? Repeat after me... HTML and HTTP,
PHP and Connectivity... OS and CSS, CGI and SSI and dHTML and sHTML... JavaScript, mySQL, dBASE,
WWW and W3C... HotLinks and ColdFusion, JSP, ASP and Beans. And of course, my
own personal Webbie LifeSaver, <br clear=''all''> which sets the next
<table> firmly in place, or else we swim far off the right side of the page...
And of course! There are a ton of proprietary sub-languages such as Macromedia Flash and Lingo,
coding in computer-based-training (CBT) software such as Authorware and RoboForm and
Toolbook...
These are worthy of a Dr. Seuss poem, no? The Chat In The Hat? :c)
You have arrived.
None of this has been easy, and none of it has come about in a quick-fire method as so many
would suppose, since we have all been told how ''instant'' the Internet world is. Wrong.
It is all a form of electronic magic. I simply (?) have learned to marry the technical
with the — beauty — which is possible with a bit of alpha-soup, an ounce of
electricity, and a phone line.
This is what I bring to my customers... a unique technical setting that is...
beautiful. The environments I create are one-of-a-kind, unique expressions. My work for you, as
my client, will be a global space that will look and feel like no other. It will stand
out. It will shine. And it will work, look, and feel like a precision
instrument, an artistic oasis, but also a setting where science and technology are
evident behind the grace.
This is the true meaning of ''sticky.'' In Net terms, stickiness means that your visitors
think about you after they've gone. And again. And very soon, they return. And THAT is where
business on the Internet begins ... loyalty both to and from your
visitors — now customers.
Through two distance, online degree programs, my background in the global world of distance
education and instructional design is extensive — both from the IT stance as well as
from the educator's and the student's vantage points.
The major offering and revelation of the Internet is: information.
It isn't enough to create a ''home page'' or even a business site. One must offer
their viewers a learning place — an environment that is easily-traveled. A place where your
visitors are made to feel like they are in control of their experience. In this way, each
visit to your site becomes a bit of education ... a learning place. This is where
my expanded tool kit is very, very unique. It will give you the advantage in reaching your
clients.
My capacity for organization and maintenance of large amounts of content has been well-proven
and documented. My extremely well-coded Web sites are high-standing on the engines. My
understanding of human-computer interface and ''learning'' is also well-represented on the
engines (Yahoo
